“Top Pentagon Official Resigning” Isn’t Who You Thought (or Hoped)

Gilford, NH (PRWEB) October 15, 2006

The co-creator of a grass roots effort to force Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to resign (at RumsfeldDiaries.com) was excited to read United Press International’s report headlined, “Top Pentagon official says he’ll resign.”

“You wake up one morning, and you’ve been working so hard to see Rummy forced out of office for his actions,” said Allen Voivod, co-creator of The Rumsfeld Diaries Political Action Pak. “And you read a headline like that, and…oh man, you can’t describe the excitement! Can it be? Can it be?”

In fact, the resigning official is Thomas O’Connell, U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict (SOLIC).

“Actually, I’m a little ticked off at UPI,” Voivod said. “I mean, I know they have do everything they can to get people to click on a headline. But ‘Top Pentagon official says he’ll resign’? That’s dirty pool, UPI.”

On the bright side, Voivod believes that the example of O’Connell, who gave several months notice of his intent to depart by the end of 2006, could be a “super-subtle” tactic to persuade Rumsfeld to resign.

“I can just imagine Rummy and O’Connell sitting down to lunch together, and O’Connell raving about the joys of early retirement. That’s certainly the definition of a ‘low-intensity conflict,’ isn’t it? Facing down a defense secretary over a Cobb salad? If that’s O’Connell’s specialty, I think this might turn out to be good news, after all.”
