Prominent Historian Sets Donald Rumsfeld’s “History Lesson” Straight

Gilford, NH (PRWEB) October 12, 2006

Ohio State University history professor Robert J. McMahon delivered a stinging rebuke to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

Rumsfeld recently spoke to the American Legion in Utah, where he compared today’s Iraq war critics to the people of yesteryear who recommended diplomacy over combat with the Nazis before World War II.

McMahon, writing for the History News Network (http://www.hnn.us), accused Rummy of using “a high-profile public forum to deliver a twisted, self-serving exposition.” McMahon went on to unravel Rumsfeld’s “deliberate distortion of history” by explaining how the Nazis cannot be compared to Islamic fundamentalists, and how an opinion different from the current administration’s doesn’t amount to “cynicism and moral confusion,” as Rumsfeld put it.

“Impugning the integrity, honor, or moral fiber of those who reach different judgments about difficult questions of national security advances neither historical understanding nor political discourse,” McMahon wrote.

“McMahon’s certainly made a fan out of me,” said Allen Voivod, a grass roots activist who’s working to see Rumsfeld resign from office. Voivod, co-creator of The Rumsfeld Diaries Political Action Pak (http://www.RumsfeldDiaries.com), added, “You really have to read McMahon’s whole article at History News Network – it’s remarkable. Not only did he put Rummy in his place, he also managed to get in a few shots at the pop-culturization of history. He’s a pretty savvy guy for a historian.”
